On the panel will be Sam Yingling, Avon Township Supervisor, who will talk about how and why he and his town board reduced its levy last year; a report from Cindy Fuerst, Director of the Vernon Area Public Library District, on her board’s decision to keep their levies flat for the last three years; State Representatives Carol Sente of District 59 and Ed Sullivan of District 51, who will give insight into current and planned legislation affecting the PTELL; and Steve Larson, Senior Financial Advisor/Executive Vice President of Ehlers & Associates, who will explain the financial consequences of a lower levy. There will be time for discussion after the panelists’ presentations.

Changes in technology continue to affect libraries on an almost daily basis. New hardware, software, and online behaviors are introduced constantly, forcing institutions to reconsider previously held notions on privacy, copyright, and just how best to serve their communities. Join us as we examine current and future technology tools, and discuss ways libraries of all sizes and budgets can make themselves future-proof.

The presentation will feature a morning keynote and an afternoon panel discussion.

Featured speaker: Jason Griffey is an Associate Professor and  Head of Library Information Technology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His latest book, Mobile Technology and Libraries, is now available as a part of Neal Schuman’s “Tech Set.” Jason’s previous book, Library Blogging, with Karen A Coombs, is available through Amazon. He can be stalked obsessively at www.jasongriffey.net and Pattern Recognition, his personal blog. He is the author of the American Libraries Perpetual Beta blog, and is also a columnist for the ALA Techsource blog. Jason was named one of Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers in 2009, and is regularly invited to speak on libraries, the social economy, mobile technology, and other technology related issues. He spends his free time with his daughter Eliza, reading, obsessing over gadgets, and preparing for the inevitable zombie uprising.
